Letter to the Editor

Embarrassed

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Dear Editor,

I was born at Best, Neb., in 1929.

I survived the Dust Bowl.

Proudly, I enjoyed the songs "My Nebraska" and the lady's World War II song to the tune of "My Darling Nellie Gray" about our children off to fight for country

Now I am very embarrassed that we have a Senator Ben Nelson bowing to corrupt politics.

Sincerely,

Dona Tropf,

Champion

  • Personal Pride has a price, I fear.

  • I am about to be sick if I see another of those commercials Ben is running to try and rehabilitate his image.

  • I'd be much more receptive to the lady's attempted message if only she'd have cited the nature of Ben's "corruption. Ben was I'm sure just trying to get what he saw as the best deal for the state he represents knowing that in the present political climate even the modest agreement with the President's policies will get one called a "socialist " by the wingnut segment of our population, even though generally those doing the calling have no clear idea of what socialism really is other than their own personal misunderstanding of the term or the definitions given to them by the likes of oxyrush Limpbaugh or the loud mouthpieces for lower wingnutistan at fixed noise channel.

I'm somewhat embarrassed to live in a state with such a narrow, selfish, and provincial point of view. But no, wingnuts I will not accede to your standard prescription which is to leave if you don't love it. I'd rather stay and continue the struggle to make it better.

  • Yep can't argue ideas so you resort to name calling. What is this third grade?

I would hardly call the presidents socialist agenda modest. Ownership of banks, auto companies and a takeove of the healtcare industry is by definition socialism. Or we could call is facist since the facists did not own the means of production they only mandated exactly what would be produced.

Ben toed the party line period and made a cuorrupt deal that many, including myself, believe is unconstitutional.

  • Chaco, if you believe the "deal" to be unconstitutional then cite that portion of the constitution which would prohibit it, then get back to me about discussing "ideas". You might also include your definition of "socialist" other than universal health care is "by definition".I'm sure it would be interesting. You do realize don't you that the TARP bailouts were an artifact of the Bush administration and that a fair share of the money has been repaid? As bad as unemployment has become imagine how much worse if large employers such as the auto industry had been allowed to fail. Perhaps too big to fail is too big generally. Lastly I said modest agreement with the President's agenda draws the accusation of "socialist" perhaps reading comprehension might be 3rd grade level.

  • It is clearly unconstituitonal because it treats some states differently than others based purely on political considerations.

Not sure what part of ownmership of banks, auto companies and the healtcare industry, single payer is the ultimate goal.

Yes Bush started TARP and I won't defend him for it. Much of the problem started under Carter and was continued under Clinton when the banks were forced to make loans not on financial consideration but on social engineering agendas. Janet Reno threatend litigartion unless a certain number of loans went to minorities and low income purchasers with no money down despite the fact most would not qualify under traditional criteria.

If The Auto makers were not union shops I would be willing to bet those jobs would not have been such a priority for the Obama admin to save. Now the federal government and the unions are the majority stockholders this is by definition socialism.

Of course as usual you had to resort to a personal attack on my reading comprehension level just pathetic. Rather than that how aout a give and take of ideas and issues or is that too much to ask?
