Bison diver qualifies for state meet

KEARNEY -- McCook High School's swimming and diving teams had several strong individual performances at the Kearney Invitational Saturday, Jan. 9.

Josh Stevens qualified for state in boys one-meter diving. Stevens finished second with a total of 316.85 points on 11 dives. Josh was less than three points behind event winner Matt Kreutzer of Kearney.

Whitney Korgan led the Bison girls with a pair of first-place finishes in automatic state qualifying times. Korgan won the girls 50-yard free style with her time of 25.25 seconds. Whitney was also first in the 100 freestyle at 56.51.

Jayde Aufrecht also hit a secondary state qualifying time in the 50 free at 27.58 to finish fifth.

The Bison girls won the 200 freestyle relay Saturday. The quartet of Aufrecht, Katie Latta, Sydnie Stamm and Korgan was timed in 1 minute, 51.42 seconds, finishing over seven seconds ahead of the second-place team from Kearney.

Madeline Shaddock had a pair of third-place finishes for the McCook girls in the 500 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.

McCook returns to action next weekend at the Lincoln High Invitational. Diving competition will be held Friday, Jan. 15, starting at 4 p.m. Swimming events will be contested Saturday, Jan. 16, starting at 10 a.m.
