Letter to the Editor

Nut prices will grow

Friday, January 8, 2010

Dear Editor,

In a recent column, (Dick Trail) mentioned living in Merced in a pecan orchard. Well, the pecan orchards are fast disappearing here in Mexifornia. The growers are pulling out the trees and grinding them up because, last year, some black-robed pervert ruled to cut off all irrigation water to them so the tiny delta smelt could enjoy life.

Since California supplies 50 percent of the nuts (the eating variety. The two-legged variety is much higher) to the rest of the country, one grower said the price will go through the roof, and most will have to be imported.

Thomas Kope,

Baldwin Park, Calif.
