Letter to the Editor

Bait and switch?

Monday, December 14, 2009

Dear Editor,

Sen. Nelson's attack dog, Mr. Fagin, is correct; it will take 60 votes to end debate on the healthcare reform bill now being debated in the Senate.

Let me say that again, "it will take 60 votes to end debate on this bill -- not pass it, just end debate."

Anyone who has been paying any attention knows how this scheme will play out.

In Washington money talks! The Senate majority leader will make it impossible for Mr. Nelson to vote no on closure or another senator will be bought off, like Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-Louisiana's now infamous "Louisiana Purchase."

This bill will gather the 60 votes needed for cloture. At that point, don't be surprised to see Mr. Nelson vote NO on final passage of the bill, but with only a simple majority needed (51), the bill will pass.

Mr. Nelson will then come back to his constituents and proclaim it's not my fault "I voted no on this bill." I just ask my fellow Nebraskans to remember that Mr. Nelson voted YES on healthcare reform before he voted against it.

EDITOR'S NOTE: -- The Senate healthcare bill would require 60 votes for cloture, which would also overcome any filibuster before it went on to require a simple majority to pass. Sen. Nelson has said publicly several times that if he is not convinced the final Senate bill will benefit Nebraskans he will not vote for cloture to end debate. He will vote no on cloture then and no on the final bill, if it survives the cloture vote.

  • Sadly, in my opinion, the problem is not so much rest with Senator Nelsons position, but more on the fact that Congressional 'Honor' seems to have fallen into the precipice of darkness and dishonor, many are suspicious of any stand their Congress-person (PC) takes on any offering that the individual does not like, or likes. In short, 'If you don't vote 'Right' (the way I want), you have no honor, even if I want wrongly.'

Two thousand pages of legal gobeldigook tends to confuse even the best of minds. If our Congress cannot read or understand it, how-dare they vote yes on it?

The few years I served in serving a small town, had enough 'politicking' going on for me. Congress has become the 'Big League' of 'Power Brokering.'

Senator Nelson has espoused his position, and will not step back from it, I pray. My deepest concern is that even though the bill passes Congress, and becomes Law, I see no avenue of paying the bill, but more a money cesspool, rotten to the core, and more expensive than Liberty, and Freedom, can afford, especially when our 'Replacement Population' ratio in the USA is only 1.3 for every two. The Retired role call continues to grow, and the Working, Supporters of the retired, wanes even faster.

Ten workers cannot support Fifty retired, without 'Running Away' from Society.

Our problems stink far deeper than all that Congressional Pork, in itself catestrophic.

For your consideration. Happy Chanukkah, and Merry Christmas to one and all. Arley Steinhour
