CULBERTSON -- Lena E. Dack, died Tuesday Dec. 1, 2009, at the McCook Community Hospital in McCook, at the age of 91. She was born Dec. 14, 1917, in Wise County at Norton, Va., the daughter of the late Isaac Edward and Savanah (Graham) Snodgrass.

She grew up at Norton, Va., where she graduated from high school. For several years she worked in the Washington, D.C. area and Brookmont, Md. On March 6, 1944, Lena entered the U.S. Army in Washington, D.C. where she was a cook.

On Dec. 31, 1944, Lena married Merle Francis Dack, at Fort Riley at Junction City, Kan. She received her Honorable Discharge from the Army on May 22, 1945.

Lena and Merle moved to Fort Carson at Colorado Springs and Fountain, Colo., before moving to Brandenburg, Ky. In 1955 they were transferred to Stutgart, Germany, and later to Fitzsimmons in Denver, Colo., followed by Fort Riley, Kan. They came to Culbertson, Neb., in 1963 where they spent the remainder of their lives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merle on Dec. 5, 2002; brothers; Raymond Allen Snodgrass, Isaac Edward Snodgrass Jr.; and sisters, Mary O. Lane and Florence E. Moore.

She is survived by four sons, Rodney Dack of Denver, Colo., Bernard Dack and wife, Jackie of St. George, S.C., Donald Dack and wife, Jeri of Bethel, Minn., Merle "Pete" Dack of Culbertson, Neb.; and two daughters, Deborah Dack of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Mary Lacy of Wetumpka, Ala.; eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at the Herrmann Funeral Chapel in Culbertson.

Inurnment will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, Neb.

Memorials may be given in her name and friends may sign her register on Monday.
