For a heaping helping of heart, how about Harvey?

Friday, October 23, 2009

The Southwest Nebraska Community Theater Association has a long track record for putting together excellent stage productions; there is a level of dedication from the top down in that organization that virtually guarantees playgoers a level of quality.

This weekend's production of Mary Chase's Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Harvey" -- taking place at the Republican River Valley Event Center in McCook through Sunday -- is another fine example of SWNCTA's work. The 12-member cast, led by Randy Andrews (as the unblinkingly good-natured Elwood P. Dowd) and Kay Flaska (as his exasperated sister, Veta Simmons), bring their characters to vivid life under the experienced hand of veteran SWNCTA director Don Harpst.

The cast features a mix of vets and newcomers to McCook's theater scene, including JeriLynn Karr, Kathy Latta, Cheryl Scott, Ray Walter, Patty Keene, Sheryl Patterson, Shayne Riley, Mike Gapp, Phil Goodenberger and Jeremy Blomstedt.

McCook and the surrounding area boasts a surprisingly large number of talented performers who are more than happy to share their various skills with their friends and neighbors. SWNCTA productions like "Harvey" give these folks the chance to do just that -- and give the people of Southwest Nebraska and Northwest Kansas a chance to see people they know from day-to-day life in a whole new (and entertaining) way.

If you're looking for an evening of laughs with a heaping helping of heart, SWNCTA's "Harvey" is just the ticket.
