Letter to the Editor

Congratulations

Thursday, October 1, 2009

Dear Editor,

Congratulations to the Eagle Scout, the artist, the City of McCook and to any and all who contributed in any way to the erection of the memorial sculpture in memory of our living and deceased veterans at the center of Norris Park. It indeed will be forever a hallmark of the city of McCook's pride in its public park and its appreciation of our men and women in our armed forces. At the dedication of the sculpture the artist spoke briefly and explained that the nine stars and the 11 red and white stripes of the American flag signified and/or symbolized the catastrophe that occurred in the attack on the twin towers in New York City on that date and the American citizens who were victims of that attack.

While the immediate crowd who were present and heard the artist at the dedication could appreciate the symbolism of the 11 stripes and the nine stars incorporated on the American flag, I have to wonder about future tourists and future generations.

Would they be able to figure out the symbolism of the flag on their own? Wouldn't it be nice after this recession is over if someone would donate a plaque like the one dedicated to the veterans, on the front, to be inscribed on the back-side with words of the artist explaining the symbolism of the nine stars and the 11 red and white stripes for the sake of future generations and tourists, who, by word of mouth, might spread it around that Norris Park in McCook, Neb., is a place not to be missed in traveling through Southwest Nebraska.
