The past meets the future at the county fair

Wednesday, July 29, 2009

It's always a challenge to select slogans for community activities, and some fall a little short.

But this year's Red Willow County Fair has hit the nail on the head with "Pride of the Past, Promise of the Future."

Fair time, after all, is a tradition that stretches to the Middle Ages and came across the ocean with the earliest European settlers.

And, while carrying on that tradition, much of the emphasis is the future, in the form of the 4-H exhibitors and performers honing their life skills through friendly competition.

This year's fair promises to be blessed with some of the most pleasant weather in memory -- and few of us with a memory of more than a couple of years will complain if it does rain during the fair.

For the daring among us, Moore's Greater Shows opens tonight at 5:30, with a couple of new rides, a ferris wheel and the Zipper.

Other highlights include the Colgate Country Showdown at 6:30 p.m. tonight. Thursday night includes stock car races and a show & shine semi truck parade at 7:30 p.m.

The NSRA rodeo starts at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and a draft horse competition is at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, with steer riding and a wild horse race at 8 p.m.

Of course, there will be the usual delicious foods and snacks, and dozens of exhibitors in commercial building and outdoors.

Don't miss this annual chance to catch up with old friends and meet news ones at the Red Willow County Fair.

  • If it didn't cost $20 for 5 kids to ride ONE ride it'd be more fun for everyone.
