Love your dog

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

Dear Editor,

I am writing this today because I am getting annoyed with the number of irresponsible dog owners in McCook.

The last time I was down to the McCook Humane Society I asked how many dogs they had in the shelter and their response was at the time 42 dogs.

I almost threw up. How can so many dogs be without homes? Why are dog owners dropping off 6-, 7-, 8- and 11-year-old dogs? These dogs live half their lives with their owners, how can people just drop them off?

I understand that people move and situations change, but this people is just ridiculous. If you are going to get a pet, be responsible, don't get a puppy because it is "cute." They bite, they pee on the floor, they chew stuff up -- if you don't have patience for this or don't think it's cute then don't get a dog.

To all of you that dump dogs in parks, in the Walmart parking lot or on country roads, I don't know how you can sleep at night, and to those of you that have dogs tied up to a tree outside that receive no attention or love, from you, find another home for them so it can live their life the way it should be.

Have patience, train your dog, discipline them, show them love and you will have a forever friend. Adopt a dog or donate to the shelter, let's all help these dogs find forever homes.
