Iraq should have chance to experience independence

Tuesday, June 30, 2009

They're celebrating in the streets in Iraq.

The country declared a public holiday today because American troops were officially withdrawn from Iraq's cities and towns, a result of an Iraqi-American security agreement that went into effect on Jan. 1.

American troops were hard to find, having closed down urban bases and moved to large forward operating bases.

The Iraqis say they'll call us if and when they need us, but we have a feeling that will only be a matter of time.

Iraq may be yet another lesson about nationalism trumping ideology, and, like Vietnam, the temptation to "declare victory and go home."

As American celebrates Independence Day, Iraq is getting a chance to do the same -- and to accept the responsibility independence entails.

  • I'm sure most won't agree with my statements voiced here..America had no business getting involved in a war with Iraq..we were fighting the righteous war in Afghanistan..and what did our government have the troops do?? pull most of them out and head into Iraq leaving other countries to continue the fight..heading back into Afghanistan is the best place right now..unfortunately Al-Quida and Bin Laden are stronger than ever...

with any luck at all Iraq will, at some point, be able to accept the responsibility that independence requires
