Honoring The Brave

Dear Nebraskans,

Our country has withstood many challenges and achieved many noble things in its short history. We have overcome tyranny and oppression to build this great nation from the ground up. We have endured recession and rebellion; stopped imperialistic nations and dictators in their paths; and defeated fascism. We have spread liberty, tolerance, democracy, and equality around the globe. We are a nation whose noble purpose has cultivated freedom and changed the world.

None of this would have been possible without the sacrifice of countless American men and women who served, fought, and in many cases, died, for their country. It is because of their bravery and selflessness that we today are free to chart our own course in the pursuit of happiness. Memorial Day is a time for reflection: to remember those who offered their lives to keep us safe and make the world a better place.

I was very pleased to have the opportunity recently to visit our veterans at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue. It truly is a tremendous place, worthy of housing those who live there. Meeting with these veterans, many of whom served in World War II, was a very humbling experience. They served their country when it, and indeed the whole world, needed them most. They have impacted the world in a way that most of us can hardly imagine, and they answered the call to serve in such an epic worldwide struggle in hopes that future generations would never bear witness to such devastation.

Recognition for our soldiers and their sacrifice extends far beyond Memorial Day. Whenever we speak freely, preach our religions, pray, or vote, it is a tribute to those who have fallen on the front lines in defense of America and our values. Whenever we demand transparency and accountability from our government, it is a tribute to those who have stood tall against the forces of totalitarianism. Whenever we think nostalgically about our past, or hopefully about our children's future, it is a tribute to all those who have ever enlisted in the United States military. Soldiers, officers, military doctors and nurses, civilian workers: we are eternally grateful and forever in your debt.

God bless you, and God bless America.

Sincerely,

Mike Johanns
