Letter to the Editor

The treasure on the hill

Friday, May 15, 2009

Dear Editor,

I was reading your editorial in the May 11th addition "Tourism has a big effect on small town economies" and your list of hidden treasures in Southwest Nebraska. I think it was right on point and an important topic. But, I did notice that there was one treasure missing from your list.

McCook is blessed with one of the finest treasures in the state, or any state for that matter. Heritage Hills Golf Course has been honored nationally a number of times for its great design, its beauty and its great playing conditions. It draws more than 1,000 tourists to McCook every year on golf specific junkets from Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas and from all over Nebraska. Tourists that wouldn't normally visit McCook come to play, dine, stay and spend. I talked to a gentleman from Denver at the course in April who was with a group of 16 players that make playing Heritage Hills for a weekend an annual event. This story is repeated all spring, summer and fall.

The reason I write this letter is to point out, not only to the editorial staff but also the organizations and individuals who promote all of McCook's treasures to tourists and even prospective businesses, that sometimes, and maybe a little too often, our treasure on the hill is sometimes forgotten and left off the list.

Please come out and play. Enjoy our treasure. You don't know what you got 'til it's gone.

  • Sure it is left off the list, it is only a golf course and there are probably tens of thousands of them and not sure but probably less than one percent of the population even play golf. You have to be smoking something to think of them as a treasure.

  • I wasn't aware that something had to be super popular to be a treasure. If that's the case, a Budweiser or Coors factory would be one of the biggest treasures.

  • What a wonderful day wtf are you smoking?

I think your numbers are a bit off...I'm almost positive more people spectate and play than 1%...

    Bjo,

I think you're missing the point...It's something that people, from afar and near DO treasure. It's nice to be able to come to a NICE course, without tons of people and extremely pricey costs to play. Just because it's not something you treasure, doesn't mean it shouldn't be mentioned.
