Snared in their own record

Friday, May 15, 2009

It's interesting that at the same time House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is trying to deny that she knew anything about "enhanced interrogation" methods, the White House has decided to release no more photos of prisoners undergoing such interrogation.

It's just another example of how those who subscribe to situational ethics become snared in the web of their own record.

  • Something is wrong with modern day politicking, they can't even tell a lie, without being 'called' on it. How will some politicians be able to speak coherently, without an occasional lie to lubricate the jaw?

Was she briefed before the technique was used, or was the technique used after she was briefed?

    Confusing.

  • One wonders if the invocation of "situational ethics" also refers to the use of those "enhanced interrogation techniques"? Near as I can tell that oh so polite and obfuscatory euphemism refers to what used to be known almost everywhere as torture including in our prosecution and execution of Japanese Army officers for the very same offense. And since the information imparted at CIA briefings was sequestered behind a wall of classification to the point that even mentioning the briefings was a violation of national security laws, and surely the opposition would have screamed bloody murder about any such violation. Finally let us be clear knowledge is not approval, planning, or execution. The current uproar over who knew hat when seems to me to be nothing much more than part of the ongoing attempt by republicans to justify the administration's use of torture by deflection and spreading the blame. If anything it ought to point to the need for a special prosecutor or investigator with subpoena powers leading to a full investigation and prosecutions where called for. I say shine a light on the whole thing and let the chips fall where they may.
