McCook battles North Platte, elements at dual track meet; MHS Bison girls outduel Bulldogs
The boys and girls track teams from McCook and North Platte battled the elements as much as each other in a dual meet Monday afternoon at the McCook High School track.
The meet was rescheduled from last Thursday because of weather. It was contested despite chilly temperatures, snow flurries and wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour.
The Bison girls edged North Platte 72 points to 60 and the North Platte boys clipped McCook 68-64.
The pole vault was not contested because of the wind.
Notable performances from the McCook girls came from Jessa Sughroue and Whitney Korgan, who each posted three first-place efforts; and senior Tara Powell, who competed in four events. Powell was on two winning relays and placed in the long jump and 200-meter dash.
"The North Platte-McCook dual was a dual of mother nature against athlete, with the McCook girls finishing on top," said McCook girls track coach Steve Clapp. "It was a day when times and distances were not as important as the heart with which the McCook girls competed. The day became a good starting point from which athletes and coaches can build into a successful season."
Sughroue easily won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 38 seconds. She beat North Platte's Nicole Behm, the runnerup, by 41 seconds.
McCook swept the relay races. The 4x400-meter relay team of Emilyne Nichols, Sugroue, Katie West and Powell was first in 4:39.9.
The first-place 4x800-meter relay team, which was clocked in 11:04.8, was led off by Becky Goodenberger. She was followed by Kelsea Geschwentner, Sughroue and Haley Harpham.
The McCook 4x100-meter relay team of Katie West, Powell, Megan Skiles and Korgan placed first with a time of 55.8 seconds.
Korgan won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.5 seconds and the 200 in 29.3.
Harpham won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:14, Sydney Jumps won the shot put with an effort of 36 feet, 6 iches and Morgan Chitwood won the discus with a mark of 108-8.
Second-place finishers for the Bison girls were Skiles, 100-meter dash, 13.9; Geschwenter, 3200, 13:54.1; Danae McCorkle, 100-meter hurdles, 17.0; Gretchen Sehnert, long jump and triple jump, 14-11 3/4 and 30-10 1/4; and Jumps, discus, 87-8.
Third-pace finishers for the McCook girls were Powell, 200 and long jump, 29.9 and 14-4 1/4; Bonnie Dominguez, 400, 1:17.4; Emily Tolliver, 3200, 14:02; Molly Peck, 300 low hurdles, 57.3; Shelby Woitaszewski, high jump, 4-6; Olivido Davila, discus, 82-6.
The McCook boys got first-place finishes from Dillon Goltl, 400, 54.8; Cody Goltl, 100-meter hurdles, 16.1; Ryan Hardin, 300 hurdles, 44.1; Tyrone Sellers, long jump, 20-4 1/2; Mark Nichols, triple jump, 43-0; and Austin Huffman, discus, 150-9.
Second-place finishers for the McCook boys were Matt Berry, 100-meter dash, 11.0; Chance Pearson, 200, 24.4; Jim Barron, 800, 2:26; Hardin, 100 hurdles, 16.3; the 4x100 relay, 47.6; the 4x400 relay of Berry, Hardin, Barron and Spencer Gillen, 3:52; the 4x800 relay of Jacob Metcalf, Gillen, Riley Haney and Nathan Priebe, 9:57.1; Keenan Brown, high jump, 5-8; Chance Pearson, long jump and triple jump, 19-8 1/4 and 38-11; and Taylor Garcia, shot put, 44-6.
Third-place finishers for the Bison boys were Aaron Ruppert, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, 17.1 and 46.4; Ryan Powell and Chad Stull (tie), high jump, 5-6; Nichols, long jump, 18-10; Brock Kotschwar, shot put, 41-3; and Garcia, discus, 123-7.
"With weather conditions being less than favorable, we elected to go ahead with the track meet," said McCook boys coach Tom Sughroue. "Most of the kids were anxious to compete despite the weather.
"We did have some very good marks on the day along with some that were not where we had hoped they would be, but with hard work and some decent weather we should see even better performance.
"As a coaching staff we are very pleased with the way our athletes willingness to compete in adverse weather conditions. Competing on days such as yesterday are not real fun, doing so just shows the athletes dedication to the sport of track and field."
The Bison boys and girls host the LeRoy Hoehner Invitational Saturday, weather permitting.
