ARAPAHOE -- Mildred I. Dyer Wickham, 93, died Sunday (March 8, 2009) at C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Center in Arapahoe.
She was born Jan. 20, 1916, at Atlanta to David L. and Bessie M. (Schrum) McBride. She graduated from Holbrook High School in 1933. She went on to Kearney State Teachers College in Kearney, 2 1/2 years and received her teaching certificate.
She began teaching and after the death of her husband Harold Dyer in 1938, she taught for 30 years in Arapahoe and McCook.
On Dec. 25, 1946, she married Sanford Eugene Wickham in Oberlin. They made their home on a farm southwest of Arapahoe. He preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1999.
She was a Baptist and later joined the First United Methodist Church in Arapahoe. She taught Sunday school for many years and was a past president of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Jolly Thimble Club for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harold Dyer and Sanford Wickham, brothers, Donald and Frank McBride and sister, Ruth.
Survivors include her sons, John Harold and wife, Dorothy Dyer of Garland, Texas, Laurence David and wife, Jerri Dyer of Highland, Calif., and Robert Lynn and wife, Patsy Dyer of Norfolk, Va.; brother, Paul and wife, Phyllis McBride of Coco, Fla.; brother-in-law, Eldon "Red" and wife, Norma Wickham of Arapahoe; sister-in-law, Greta McBride of Ault, Colo., and Betty McBride of California; 25 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m., at First United Methodist Church of Arapahoe with the Rev. Michael Flury officiating. Interment will be at the Arapahoe Cemetery.
Viewing and visitation is today until 8 p.m., and Thursday, from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe and prior to the service at the church on Friday.
