'Civil War Voices' defining moment for Fox Theatre

Monday, February 23, 2009

When we look back on the resurrection of the Fox Theatre, Saturday night's performance of "Civil War Voices" will be the defining moment.

Civic-minded columnist Dick Trail's review of the production is on page one today, and we won't repeat or supplement that effort here.

But combine a packed theater, a compelling story featuring the writings of the ancestor of a local family, as well as a reminder of our nation's deepest struggle, and it was a magical evening.

The time is right for "Civil War Voices," with the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth, as well as the election of the first African-American president. We hope and expect many more audiences will be exposed to this quality, professional, compelling tale.

The story was a reminder of how young our nation really is, and how the war between the states touched everyone in it, with repercussions echoing to this day.

"Civil War Voices" was a timely reminder of American's ability to deal with adversity, and should serve as an inspiration for all of us as we deal with adversity in the future.

Thanks to the talent of McCook High School grad Jim Harris, who wrote the production, and the generosity of Harris Brothers Ranch LLC and Eleanor Harris, the net proceeds of Saturday night's production will help make the Fox Theatre a place where many more such magical moments can happen as the years go by.
