Letter to the Editor

Name delay OK

Friday, February 13, 2009

Dear Editor,

I am glad that the name change of the airport in favor of Sen. Ben Nelson has been set aside for now. It's not that he doesn't deserve the recognition but I have serious reservations about doing it before he retires from public office. A point in reference is Illinois Gov. Blagojevich; he went from hero to dunce in a matter of days.

It can all come crashing down with just a slip of the tongue and being caught on tape. Who knows what could happen in Ben Nelson's future that may come back to haunt us if we prematurely make adulations -- (or) to any sitting mayor, senator or governor?

Does Sen. Nelson deserve the recognition? Sure he does, but let's wait until he retires from office and comes back home first.

Bill Longnecker,

McCook

  • It's unfair to compare Senator Nelson to Governor Blagojevich. I did not realize that Governor Blagojevich was ever a hero.

Very few cities have airports named after politicians who are still living, Ted Stevens International at Anchorage is one exception.

Senator Nelson does deserve the recognition, and I'm sure the good people of McCook could find something better than an airport to name after him, maybe something with which he had a closer connection in the past...

  • I hate to say it, but perhaps, you are right to say wait. Senator Ben does deserve recognition, but, first, I want to see if he votes for H. R. 40, presently in the 111th session, under consideration.

If passed, it will appoint a commission to determine how much recompense we will/may owe descendants of Slaves, once owned by our fore-fathers. I can only hope that the House of Representatives rejects this bit of tripe, in committee. (I'll leave it at that)

Unfortunately if we delay in naming the airport we will have to name it the Harry Reid / Ben Nelson Airport.

Ben Nelson at one time was his own man but he is nothing now but a puppet for the Liberals like Harry Reid. He just voted for the biggest spending bill in our nation's history and he like all the others that voted yes had not even read the bill. On second thought, naming the airport after Ben Nelson would fit right in with some of the other recent debacles that have been associated with McCook.
