Letter to the Editor

Republican bias

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Dear Editor,

Dick Trail's article of Tuesday, Jan. 20, in the McCook Daily Gazette had some truths in it, but mostly sounded like a very biased Republican who is in the state of vexation over the Republicans' defeat in the last two elections.

His first sentence in this article is true, and I quote: "Before leaving town, President George W. Bush declared Washington D.C. a disaster area."

Well, G.W. Bush certainly put Washington D.C. in a disaster, all right, along with the whole country with his fiscal and other irresponsible decisions.

The worst, of course, was starting a seven-year war with Iraq over the false assumption there were "weapons of mass destruction" there.

But that's water under the bridge, and it is now time to turn things around and move forward.

It is sad that the only thing Mr. Trail plans on doing to help this administration and the country move forward by undoing this mess the Bush administration created, is to sit back and watch and have fun doing so.

He actually stated this three times in his column, and I quote: "that it was and will be fun to watch."

In one sentence, he states that "Obama may be in over his head," so I presume he will sit back, watch and have fun if he fails. Such great patriotism.

But I say no one person can deliver us from this mess. It will take the will and work of all Americans who wish this country well, and their full support of their government to succeed.

This government certainly isn't perfect, but it is still the best government in this world we live in. The old saying is still true. "United we stand, divided we fall."

Let us pray to the Triune God that He be with us and forgive us, for if the Triune God is not with us, we certainly will fall. He sent his Son Jesus Christ into this world to forgive and forget our sins and mistakes, so let us pray God continues to do so.

And may the Triune God bless this great United States and may she continue to stand under God.

Respectfully,

Garnet Henton,

McCook

  • I'm afraid that you forget that your Congress decided to commit troops to Iraq under the same information that was provided to Bush. Don't let them have a pass if the war is what you're truly upset about. The truth is, Congress had the same information that Bush had and that's why they had closed sessions to review much of that information and it's also why CONGRESS decided to commit troops to Iraq. The U.N. and intelligence agencies from other countries also believed there were WMD in Iraq and when Saddam refused to comply with U.N. resolutions under the treaty he signed after the war in Kuwait, he increased the suspicions of the world community, not just the US. Of course, the popular thing is to say Bush "tricked" everybody into it and ignore the facts that really led us here. Congress doesn't want to take any responsibility because of the unpopularity of the war despite their own votes.

As far as fiscal decisions go, the economy begun its decline over the past 2 years. Which is when the Democrats took control of Congress and could have passed legislation to prevent the mess we're in. Of course, nothing is their fault because Bush is the easy scapegoat we've all been told is the sole problem and everyone's an expert on "false assumptions" in hindsight.

I have no problem in saying I hope that Obama fails to pass many of the policies he is proposing because I believe their passage will hurt our country and many of the things I believe in such as my pro-life belief. The greatest myth out there is that Obama's success means success for everyone. That's simply not true and if you disagree with his policies then you should oppose them. It's called dissent and dissent is as far from unpatriotic as you can get. How do you think we started this country? I will oppose anyone who tries to tell someone to blindly support something or someone they don't believe in. The whole "hope he succeeds" philosophy has never truly been explained and reeks of the suppression of healthy dissent and alternative viewpoints. If the President is doing something or supporting something you don't believe in then you have a duty to object and hope he fails in those efforts. It sure didn't stop the Bush haters.

  • "I will oppose anyone who tries to tell someone to blindly support something or someone they don't believe in."

This is what we did 8 years ago with Bush. Look where that got us...

We should come together and be "one America" instead of a divided America. Why can't the Republicans give someone else a chance? It can't get much worse. It sure doesn't seem American to me to say "I hope our President fails".

  • mccook1 nailed it perfectly! but, since it's in vogue to blame bush, they do! i'm still waiting for people to admit that bush received bad intell, and not that he's just a war monger! come on people....you don't still believe FDR had all the answers, do you? if we all want to come together, we'd get rid of the idiots that we know have screwed up this country! care to guess who they are????? since i don't want to single out anyone, i won't mention names, but, i promise that they come from both parties!!! we should blame ourselves...we voted them in!!! god bless america!!!

  • Mr Henton, You, of course have your opinion, rightfully so, but you quote Mr Trail with: "that it was and will be fun to watch.", then offer two qualifying words, I do not remember him uttering: "sit back," as an addition to the quoted words. Having grown up on a farm, and having served as career Jet Pilot, coupled with knowing the man, I am sure that Mr Trail knows very well, how to watch, without the required sit back position being involved.

I cannot address how you 'watch,' be it while being productive, or just sitting back, but Mr Trail is capable of both.

I offer this, not so much as a rebuke, but as an alert to all thinking people; to please watch how people say something as well as what they say, mine too.

You promoted your faith, at closing. My study tells me that our God will chastise this country if we accept baby killing, same sex marriages, and other 'abominations,' to our God. I don't understand how, or why, He would not. Pray, we must.

In Messiah, His Shalom, and wisdom. Arley Steinhour

  • Unfortunately the "information" provided to former president Bush and thence to congress mostly originated in the offices of then Vice-President Cheney, Secretary Rumsfeld and their advisers like Wolfowitz and Feith in their Office of Special Plans who had long since decided on the invasion and cooked whatever intelligence to create that result.Had the liberal media pursued the lead provided by the Downing Street memo:http://downingstreetmemo.com/ this would be more common knowledge by now.The neocons of Project for a New American Century(PNAC) were never intent on any resolution but the invasion/occupation of whatever nation fitted their ends.Dissent is indeed far from unpatriotic, but that fact didn't seem to prevent any of the Bush followers from labeling anyone who dissented from the decision to go to war on specious evidence as "unpatriotic", un/antiamerican, treasonous or a host of other unsavory names now did it?

I'm still puzzling atthe phenomenon displayed by the bushistas of labeling any disagreement or dissent however mild as "hate". I'm convinced that it arises from that factions long and intimate familiarity with that emotion.
