Food solution

Wednesday, January 28, 2009

Dear Editor,

If you watch the news you know that times are tough and getting tougher. Jobs are being lost across the country and in our own town. My concern is the people in this area are not taking advantage of programs that are there to help. One place in particular is the Community Supper on Thursday nights at the Methodist Church. It is not a soup supper. Various organizations and businesses help prepare or donate the food. It is a chance to get a FREE meal, meet some new people and have some social contact. They don't preach or anything else. The food is always good. They serve from 5:30 to 6:30 and my advice is to get there early. There is no reason for anyone not to go. They want more people. Please go. You do not have to call ahead. Just show up.

A second program that is underused is Prairie Land Food. The only requirement for this program is to volunteer 2 hours a month. Everyone does this, they just may not realize it. Anything you do for someone else and do not get paid for is volunteering. The food costs about half of what you can buy it in the stores. You get 6 meats and 6-8 fresh fruits and vegetables. After you buy the Prairie Pak for $24 and two hours of volunteer time, you may also buy the specials. They vary in price and you must have one hour of volunteer time for each special. I cannot believe there are not more people in McCook who this program wouldn't help with their budget. You can pay with cash, check, or EBT. There are no income guidelines. EVERYONE CAN BUY! It saves you money. There is a different menu each month. February's meats are Ham Steak (Four-4 oz. steaks), Boneless Chicken Wings ( 24 oz.), Ground Beef (1 lb.), Deli Sliced Turkey Breast (12 oz.), Crispy Breaded Fish Portions (18 oz.), and Pork Breakfast Sausage (12 oz.). The Specials for February are a "Lil Combo"-- $13 (two beef steaks, four ground beef patties, two boneless pork chops, and two chicken breast filets). "The Yard Bird Special -- $17 (61⁄4 lbs of fully cooked Honey BBQ Chicken Wings). Prime Beef Rib Roast -- $18.00 (5-6 lbs USDA Prime Beef Ribeye Roast).

You can find more about Prairie Land Food or order by calling Cathy Lubben 345-2143 or 340-9428. At least try it. It will save you money. The orders must be in and paid for by Feb. 9 and the food will come in at the YMCA on Feb. 21.
