Law to require jail time for speeding not needed

Saturday, January 17, 2009

Gearheads would have something more to aim for than bragging rights and their name in the court news if an Omaha state senator has his way.

Sen. Heath Mello of Omaha introduced a bill that would force drivers convicted of speeding between 100 and 120 miles per hour to spend at least a day in jail.

Driving faster than 120 miles an hour and up to 150 miles per hour would result in a jail sentence of at least three days and over 150 mph would put you behind bars for at least five days.

Jail time would add up with more tickets; the second time you were clocked doing 120 to 150 miles an hour would get you 10 days in the hoosegow.

We have to wonder what brought this proposal about, as well as just how many cars in Nebraska can actually go 150 mph, let alone stay on the road while doing it.

Is the legislation worth the Unicameral's consideration?

Certainly driving that fast is dangerous, but does it happen often enough to warrant a special law?

We doubt it.
