Ready, set ... go! Christmas race officially begins

Monday, December 8, 2008

It has been a mild fall and snowfall has been limited, but if the nip in the air and snowy forecast weren't enough to put you in the Christmas mood, there was no excuse after last weekend.

Perhaps the best KFNF Christmas Lights Parade yet rolled down Norris Avenue Saturday night, with hundreds sticking around for the entertaining Santa Cash Grab from the money machine at Norris and C. It was a pleasant night and the floats were more colorful than ever.

Adding to the hustle and bustle of downtown McCook Saturday night was the McCook Community College production of A Christmas Carol, inside the Fox Theatre with its brightly-lit marquee. Beautiful sets and talented actors brought the classic tale of the giving spirit to life.

Sunday saw the Central Elementary Central Connection join the McCook Area Community Chorus for the annual Christmas concert at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook.

There's nothing like hearing the church's magnificent pipe organ respond to the playing of Dr. J. Gordon Christensen, along with the handbell choir, flute, piano and voices performing classic and modern Christmas music.

And the events will continue; the Evangelical Free Church plans two performances of its Singing Christmas Tree on Sunday, and the McCook Christian Church plans an innovative "A Night in Bethlehem" on Dec. 20, plus many other special holiday services are planned.

Amid all the sobering economic news, the celebration of the traditional Christmas message is a welcome respite.
