ATWOOD -- Lewie Elmer Grout, 94, died Monday (Nov. 3, 2008).

He was born July 12, 1914, in Atwood to Robert and Edna Grout. He attended middle school and completed his sophomore year of high school in Atwood.

On March 28, 1943, he married Velma Rahe. He farmed east of Atwood for 11 years. They moved to Aurora, Colo., where his wife preceded him in death.

He returned to Atwood and later married Bette Hackney on Oct. 15, 1986.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Velma; brother, Ira; and four sisters, Freda, Verla, Edith and Esther.

Survivors include his wife, Bette; two step-daughters, Vicki Houston of Lakewood, Colo., and Sandy Van Curen of Peabody, Kan.; two step-sons, Marlin Hackney of Kansas City, Mo., and Lyle Hackney of Oberlin; and numerous niece, nephews, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday, 1 p.m., at United Methodist Church in Atwood with the Rev. Gary Davison officiating. Interment will be in the Atwood Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be Thursday after noon at the church.

Williams Funeral Home of Atwood is in charge of arrangements.
