Election issues

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

This week's On the Street question is: What is the issue most important to you in this election?

Susan Maucher

"I don't know; I haven't been following it."

Susan Maucher,McCook

Samantha Stuck

"Just the economy overall; it's going downhill."

Samantha Stuck, McCook

Chelsea Wells

"Honestly, I haven't even been following it. I'm almost 19 and I'm not even registered to vote. People should be more involved -- there should be some sort of outreach. If there were, I'm sure I would have gotten involved."

Chelsea Wells, McCook

Karen Waddell

"If Palin makes it, I'm going to flee to Canada. Palin has absolutely no experience -- if we're outstate Nebraska, then what is Alaska? I mean it's scary, because the issues aren't being discussed."

Karen Waddell, McCook

  • The economy and the escalating price of necessities. Food, gas, utilities, taxes, health insurance, etc. By the time we get done paying for the increasing cost of necessities, there is very little left over for even the small pleasures in life. It sometimes makes you wonder why you bother to work. All of those things would be taken care of by social programs, and if there isn't going to be anything left over anyway, maybe we should all just live off the government.

  • I think the gazette should have taken this poll with people other then High School students who clearly don't care, notice the last woman was the one who actually had an opinion.

  • cowgurl... if no one works, who funds the social programs you so willingly want to take part of?

If you pay less in taxes, wouldn't you have more money to pay for the necessities?

  • Proud - I didn't do a very good job of making my point. Low income people receive assistance with food, health care, utilities, housing, even college education for their children. Why would they ever want to work hard to raise themselves out of poverty, only to have to pay for all of those things out of their own hard-earned dollars? My point is: it's beginning to feel like being a so-called middle-income earner makes you no better off than someone living in poverty. Neither has any discretionary spending money left over. I think we agree that taxing middle income to help low income is beginning to backfire in America. But I don't really think either political party has a good solution for that problem.

  • Karen Wadell - Your most important "issue" is the experience of a V.P. candidate? Not the economy (thank you Ms. Stuck for being the only person interviewed with an actual "issue"), not healthcare, not anything about the tax code, not the experience of a presidential candidate, nor foreign policy? Please tell me where to send your one way ticket to Canada, it would be my pleasure.

  • cowgurl... to that we can agree. Sorry I misunderstood your comment.

  • Only Ms. Stuck answered the "issue" question in the initial interviews. There are issues that need to be discussed, like the differences in each candidates tax policies, National security, foreign policy and who you want to lead the country in a time where terrorists and rogue nations want to do harm to the United States. I'll be traveling through McCook after the elections and will offer free transportation to Canada for anyone who feels the need to give up their American citizenship (if a certain candidate is elected.)

  • Hopefully that candidate isn't elected so you won't have to spend your leftover money deporting people to canada.

  • Karen,

Obviously you're still stuck in the 60's.

Mrs. Palin, running for the 2nd highest office in the country, has more executive experience, leadership qualities, professional knowlege of "economy" as a whole, knowlege of how the armed forces operate, etc.etc.etc. than does YOUR braindead, sorry-_ _ _ ed excuse of a nominee Obama, who's running for "PRESIDENT!"

If you think Obama is the answer, you're just as disillusioned as the high school students interviewed above. Name one major thing he's done in his entire political career. Here, I'll give you a hint. It starts with N and ends in E. Still confused? Put ON in between them. If not reading from a teleprompter all he can say is.....uh.....uh.....uh. Yeh, he's gonna bring change alright......I'm gonna puke.

yeahc'mon, I'll pitch in on that plane ticket as long as it's one way.

  • I currently live in Fairbanks, AK. Our state government was as corrupt as they get until Sarah was elected. I had the pleasure of meeting Sarah and her husband Todd in Fairbanks when Todd finished the Iron Dog snomachine race(GOOGLE IT)last spring. Never have I met a person/politician who was so down to earth and respectful of others as Sarah and Todd. Alaskans, (me included) give Sarah an 80% approval rating for good reason, she promised change. That's what we have received while she has been in office.

If Karen Waddell wants to move to Canada, you may as well start packing. If Obama is elected it will be a safer country to live in. I know I am moving there if he wins.

    Former McCook resident.

  • just think what was clinton before he was president, he was a govenor, obama do,es not even have a clue, i think sarah palin has enough exsperiance to be president.

  • yeah clinton was a governer,...then we impeached him for incompetence and for being a philanderer

  • Great idea, lets do an outreach program, spend tax payer money, lets provide supper and maybe even babysitting, so that people can sit in class, eat, drink, and ovbiously NOT pay attention to a darn thing that is going on. Then lets all blame the outreach program for not meeting our needs, and not teaching us anything!!! How long have we had the 26th Amendment allowing 18 year olds the right to vote-- since 1971??? And if I am not mistaken there are classes that stress voting and the constitution, and guess what they WERE FREE in high school! But I guess you only get out of it what you put in it!

CAN WE PLEASE GET OUT OF THE BELIEF SYSTEM OF "ITS NOT MY FAULT, NOBODY FORCE FED ME"! Lets quit blamming others for things that WE choose ourselves not to do!!

  • This is my 30th year in Fairbanks Alaska. Born in McCook and couldn't wait till I Graduated from RV to head for Alaska. Sarah Palin, I voted for her for Gov. She is now showing that she is no different than any other politician! I won't vote for her again! No She is not ready to be VP unless she stops being coached by the party!

  • Great cross section of our community represented in this poll. Why even bother?

  • Ever wonder why our country has some of the problems it does? This is one of the reasons, 3 teenagers that may be able to vote and don't have any idea what is going on with our economy and government and then another person who wants to leave the country rather than try and help fix the problems, if they don't get their selfish way.

  • You think this will only help the wealthy, wait until you try and get a loan to buy a car, house or piece of farm equipment. If you have a 401 retirement plan as 62 million people do, then watch it lose it's value if this package is not passed. This meltdown will effect all of us and in a negative way.

  • It's the economy stupid!

Too bad the publicans think they got their poor feelings hurt by "Nancy" today. Hog wash! Think of the people of this country before your inflated egos!

Too bad they put their pride above the welfare of every man, woman and child of this country.

Just like george says above, try and get credit this next week, if it's bad for an individual think what it's going to be for the companies that need to borrow short term to meet their obligations....like your paycheck! Hells bells the boys voted against ol' W on this one, how do you spell sacrilege!

And before you people tear Karen apart on her comments about Sara, listen to the interview with Katie Couric, sad really sad! Another W but better looking!

  • Saying that you will forgoe your American citizenship based on the election of a candidate (ANY CANDIDATE) you do not like is the issue. Regardless of your opinion of a candidate, you are either Un-Patriotic, Un-American or Un-intelligent if you would be willing to give up your citizenship over an election. So "tearing" someone apart for making that type of statement seems logical to me.

  • I always wonder how republicans can exist because they are purely morons. As for Jim Foster's comment, have you heard the saying "Jesus was a community organizer, Pontius Pilate was a governor." Assuming you are a conservative Christian, you should have no problem understanding that statement. If McCain/Palin wins the election, there will be a revolution.

Yeahc'mon - the vp's experience and ability to become president is more important in this election than any other. McCain is 72 (would be the oldest president ever elected) and has been having many health problems. Palin would literally a heartbeat away from being president.
