Typo'ing history

Thursday, August 14, 2008

Dear Editor,

My book review, "Jerusalem the Eternal City," was published in the Gazette on Aug. 8, 2008. Authors David Galbraith, Kelly Ogden and Andrew Skinner carefully state in it that Ottoman control of Jerusalem and Palestine was from 1517 to 1917.

British conyrol of Palestine (Israel) began Nov. 2, 1917, and ended in May 1948. Gen. Edmund Allenby's British troops in the Holy Land were there because of the Balfour Declaration. This was a declaration that dealt with the Jewish homeland in Jerusalem. British forces defeated Turks from the Ottoman Empire in Palestine during World War I.

The Ottoman control of Palestine lasted 400 years. Your typing mistake stated that it was 1917-1948.

Helen Ruth Arnold,

McCook
