Letter to the Editor

The Long Walk

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Dear Editor,

For those readers who are inquiring about the "Long Walk" by Slavomir Rawicz -- it was published by the Lyons Press, copyright 1956, 1984 and 1997.

Ronald Downing helped Rawicz write it and overcome the language barrier of Polish to English. (Rawicz did not speak fluent English.)

Inquiries can be made to the Lyons Press, 31 West 21st Street, New York, NY 10010.

Since the story took place between 1939-1945, and Rawicz was 26 years old, when this experience began, he may no longer be living. He would be 95 years old today.

I bought this book from the History Book Club for $15. The New York Times reviewed it. Check with the McCook Public Library for information on it.

The complete title is The Long Walk The True Story of a Trek to Freedom. In 1997, Rawicz was living in England. It was first published by Constables in England in 1956. It is cataloged by the Library of Congress.
