Letter to the Editor

Pay attention

Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Dear Editor,

At the NRD Meeting on 1-8-08, I asked to speak, and made it clear in my first statement that my question was not about the LB70l fund.

I asked Mr Smith then, "Why did the NRD raised my property taxes again this year? The Natural Resource Levy Rate was what I was talking about.

Last year's levy was 0.053973, this year it went up to 0.061429, which is an increase.

Whether Mr. Smith and the newspaper reporter didn't understand or choose not to understand, I don't know.

Our treasurer has the NRD LB701 fund levy rate separated, from the Natural Resource levy rate which is the NRD's General Fund. Other counties did not separate the levy rates.

The people in those counties do not know how much they are being stiffed by the NRD's increased general fund, how much they are paying our for noncomplaince by the irrigator's, one county even has an increase in taxes for a new NRD building.

Red Willow County taxpayers should be "Thanking our treasurer for her wise decision to separate the levy rates."

I agree with Mr. Richards that an informational meeting where the public can come and ask questions of the board members should be held and a place where the public CAN HEAR.

The city auditorium just isn't the place.

I also feel that Sen. Christensen should be at the meeting.

This time, though, keep his scare tactics out of it, how he hates to see his property taxes go up that he keeps applying to?

Which, irrigation land or home owner's property taxes?

BUT people need to get out and attend the meeting. Ask questions.

There is a lot of misunderstanding out there and a lot going on that the homeowner is not aware of.

One is HOW long LB701 will be on the backs of the homeowner property taxes? All due to the irrigator's noncompliance.

Why is it only irrigators are on the board?

Who does Sen. Christensen represent? He needs to be watched on his bills he is bringing up this year at the Legislature.

People are JUST not paying attention to what the NRD is doing.
