Election season begins today; where will it end?

Thursday, January 3, 2008

Well, it's official; the election season begins today with the Iowa caucus.

Where will it end?

Will it be with the first black man, the first woman, the first Mormon, or the second former governor from Hope, Ark., in the White House?

Only time will tell.

A radio commentator said this morning that all the babies in Iowa have chapped lips and sore backs from being kissed and patted by candidates, and voters in big states like California, New York and Florida are peeved about not getting the attention their electoral college counts deserve.

But we're not going to complain about a small state being in the spotlight; how do we get our share?

There's something about "retail politics" that fulfills an important purpose, giving voters and the media covering the candidates the chance to get up-close-and-personal with those who want become the leader of the free world.

That's something that won't happen in New York or Los Angeles.

We can only hope that voters won't put up with accepting the canned messages and negative campaigning that have always proved so effective in the past.

With more media outlets than ever, plus political blogs of every strip and instant research available at the click of the mouse, there's no reason for voters to settle for superficial knowledge about each of the contenders.

Let's give the candidates our full attention for the next 10 months. Our future depends on it.
