Chair clarification

Tuesday, December 11, 2007

Dear Editor,

I was glad to see the picture of Chad Lyons and his students painting the chairs for the Toy Box on the front page of Saturday's paper (12/8/07). However, I think there should be some clarification of why the school donated the chairs and toys to the Toy Box.

Several years ago part of the child development program included a week long pre-school for area children.

Two years ago the Family Resource Center lost the grant for their pre-school so McCook Public Schools took over the program. The pre-school is located at the McCook Elementary School and Jamie Garey is the teacher. Since we now have a pre-school that the child development students can participate in, the Family and Consumer Science department doesn't need to have a pre-school.

All of the toys and equipment were in storage and not being used. The pre-school was given all of the toys they could use and the rest were donated to the Toy Box for local children to enjoy.

This was not done due to the death of LaDonna Anderson-Poore. Child Development is still offered as part of the Family and Consumer Science program.

I would like to thank Mr. Lyons and his class for painting the chairs.  We hope several children will be able to enjoy using them.

 Sincerely,

Eileen Young

Family and Consumer Science Teacher,
