Let's not wait so long for our next big party

Monday, December 10, 2007

The miserable weather forced the governors to send their regrets, but by all accounts, the Governor's Ball was a memorable climax to McCook's Quasquicentennial Celebration.

Gov. Dave Heineman and Sen. Ben Nelson, a former governor, as well as master of ceremonies Seth Denny of NTV were unable to make the trip, but the Nebraska Legislature was well represented in the person of current representative Mark Christensen, who flew in from Washington and drove from Denver in time for the later festivities, and former legislators Tom Baker and and Owen Elmer.

Despite the weather, more than 200 turned out at $50 a ticket, enjoying deliciously catered local fare, women adorned in ball gowns and many of the men in tuxedos.

McCook was ready for a party after 125 years in existence, and it got one, complete with beautiful decorations, and dancing to the music of the Lonny Lynn Orchestra.

Judging from the response, a lot of us enjoy big-band ballroom dancing.

Let's not wait another 125 years for another big party!
