Letter to the Editor

High quality applicants

Saturday, December 8, 2007

Dear Editor,

For the last few years, I have had the privilege of being on the McCook Civil Service Commission. The commissioners, if you don't not already know, are involved in the hiring and promotion of members of the police and fire departments.

What we do is pick, administer and score a test appropriate for the position being considered and interview each of the applicants who pass the test.

The test scores are combined with the more subjective scores we (the members of the commission) assign, based on our interviews with the applicants. The three top scoring applicants become the candidates from which the city manager and the police or fire chief make the final decision of whom to hire or promote.

I will be leaving the commission at the end of December when I retire and move to Pennsylvania. I am writing this to let you know how impressed I have been with the applicants who have come before the commission. The people of McCook should consider themselves fortunate for having such high caliber applicants for the police and fire departments.

Sam Williams,

McCook
