Crete parent impressed with sportsmanship

Saturday, November 24, 2007

It was disappointing to hear even a few loud "BOOs" at the state championship, despite at least one obviously bad call replayed in a gigantic television screen.

Thankfully, McCook has maintained its reputation as home to some of the best good sports in high school football, and the following anonymous e-mail was heartening:

"I was at the Class B Championship football game last week, and want to commend the McCook football team on showing some real class. After the game, the Crete football helmets were strewn all about the field. After the handshakes, the McCook team had to walk amongst them.

"I was expecting a few to be kicked around a bit, if not at least nudged or stepped upon. After all, we are talking about young teenage boys.

"But not one was touched. The players just walked around them. I was impressed! And then to further show more class, the majority of the football team got down on one knee and watched respectfully as the Crete players were given their championship medals.

"The McCook coaches, parents and fans should be very proud of the class that the football team showed on that Saturday night. I'm sure it was a very heartbreaking thing to endure, but your team did it with a tremendous amount of class.

"I am a Crete Cardinal parent, and I was impressed. I'm sure that the people watching NETV did not see any of that, but being at the game, I did. In today's world, mostly only the really rotten stuff makes the news.

"Too bad for that, because the world could use more sportsmanship like this.

"As I said before, you should be very proud of those young men."

The letter was signed, simply, "A Crete parent."

Congratulations again to the Bison, coaches, staff, parents and fans. Let's keep it up. Win or lose, good sportsmanship is something of which we can all be proud.
