Early out, early done is good shopping advice

Friday, November 23, 2007

The crowds were out early today looking for bargains -- some stores even had Thanksgiving specials and some, including one local store, opened at 4 a.m. for dedicated shoppers.

But finding a bargain may not be worth it if you've had to lose sleep and battle long lines to get it.

For those items you still need to buy, the National Retail Federation offers some shopping tips:

* Prepare a list, but also include alternate selections in case you are unable to find some of the items on your list.

* Avoid crowds by shopping during stores' early and late extended hours.

* If you are looking for specific advertised items, take the complete ad with you to make sure you have the right price, item and store.

* Staple a gift receipt to the merchandise tag in case it needs to be returned or exchanged, and keep your original receipts with any warranty paperwork for the life of the warranty.

* Remember, you're buying for someone else's wants and needs, but don't be surprised if you find something you'd like as well.

* Shop safely! Watch your personal belongings at all times including handbags and purchases. The stores are not responsible for any lost items, so be careful, especially at the register when you can easily be distracted.

* Perhaps there's a charity group willing to wrap your gifts for you -- saving you time for more important things on your holiday to-do lists.

* When shopping online, have your credit cards and address book handy, as some Web sites allow only a limited time to enter your information.

* And remember to wear comfortable shoes -- you will be walking a lot.

Get your shopping done early, and leave yourself plenty of time to enjoy the holidays with family and friends.
