Tax clarification

Saturday, November 10, 2007

Dear Editor,

Oops, in my letter to the Gazette printed Nov. 7, my comment about voting for Sales Tax Ballots 2 and 3 was confusing and I would hope to clarify my thoughts.

If 2 and 3 pass, and one fails, it will not eliminate our present 1 percent sales tax, it would continue until its sunset. Temporarily, the total sales tax would rise to 11?2 percent.

Then, hopefully, a more sensible formula for a new tax could be presented.

I am not against sales taxes. I would gladly pay 2 or 3 percent if I felt it would be used to turn McCook around.

I fear some future demand for a vital project may arise, and we will have no well to tap if we max out the sales tax now.

I am unwilling to give the city more money when they haven't proven to me they are frugal and willing to give our biggest problems their best effort.

'Nuff said.

Bill Frasier,

McCook
