Deer tale

Friday, November 9, 2007

Dear Editor,

Deer hunting rifle season starts this weekend. Many speak of legends of past deer hunts from days gone by. Here is the best deer tale I ever heard!

It was back in the 1970s and many local farmers were going broke as it was with this farmer. Adding to his problems was deer eating his crops and destroying his fences. Well, it came to a head one day in the late fall when the farmer found one of his prize yearling calves killed.

It was clear a buck had done it. Oh, bucks can become very agressive in rut. He got so angry he got his M1 carbine with a 30-shot clip and in less than a day killed 40 deer. His wife was so afraid that the fines and jail would be the end of their farming way of life (that) she made her husband, with his bladed tractor, dig a big hole. I mean a big one, and then, with his pickup, he hauled all the deer and buried them. His wife told this story at his funeral, and this last year, we buried her, but the legend still lives.

EDITOR'S NOTE -- We're sure the sportsmen among our readers, not to mention law enforcement officials, are offended by such flagrant violation of the law as well as ethical hunting practices. Nevertheless, we're sure it went on. We hope those days are past.
