What about Milford Lake?

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

Dear Editor,

A question.

After reading in the Sept. 12 issue of the Gazette about the budget for the NRD water buyout, I wondered what was the status of the Milford Lake near Junction City, Kan., which is the first dam to catch the water we are sending to Kansas.

First, I called the Bureau of Reclamation in McCook, phone (308) 345-4400. They gave me the number of the Corps of Engineers office in Kansas City, who told me the lake level was two feet above recreation level and there was no irrigation water letout, just for boating, fishing, etc.

So it looks like to me we are being taxed heavily so they can have fun, but not for irrigated farming.

I wonder if the Nebraska NRDs have ever given this a though, or asked Kansas what they intend to do with "their water."

Just a thought,

Cloyd Peters,

McCook
