Letting lawn go

Thursday, August 23, 2007

Dear Editor,

I am constantly amused by our illustrious City Council and the heads of the departments. People are having a hard enough time paying the water bills due to the mandated improvements to the water treatment facilities and now they intend to increase the bills again due to a lack of use.

Sure, people have enjoyed having the rain water their lawns and flowers. I would too, if I were concerned with keeping up with the Joneses.

My weeds look just as good as a lawn when they're mowed and green. When it rains, they get water, if it doesn't, they don't.

As the water rates go up and people have to start making decisions about whether to have nice lawns or have something they need, the lawn will probably come up short.

My dad always said that if you can't eat it, drink it, wear it or use it, don't waste your money on it. Took me a long time to see the wisdom of what he said, but it sure makes sense now.

Water is not endless, and potable water is getting scarce, if you listen to the experts and the health professionals, so here's the rub.

You can either drink the water or water your lawn. It takes less water to quench a thirst than to water a lawn. My yard will continue to go without.
