Letter to the Editor

Chief forgotten?

Friday, August 3, 2007

Dear Editor,

I was glad to see Walt Sehnert give kudos to the local fire department but I was sorely dissappointed to see that he left out one person that built the fire department into what it is today.

That was my father, Fred Walker who was fire chief and dedicated 25 years of his life from 1951 to 1976 to the city of McCook and the fire department.

He came here when the fire department was housed in what is now Deveny Motors (Budke Motors at the time). He was responsible for the purchase of the first truly modern fire truck (and many more trucks) and the building of the fire station where it is now. I am sorry that Walt jumped from the 1920s to the 1980s and missed dad's many contributions to the city and the fire department.

Thanks.

Steve Walker,

McCook

  • Steve, Dont I remember some great story about your mom going over to their neighbors to spend the night when the Holts were missing??? Your dad-the Chief--was out of town. It turned out she was staying at the killer's house?

    Is that right?
