Annual fair time arrives for Red Willow County

Monday, July 23, 2007

It was expected to be near 100 degrees today, and not far from it for the rest of the week.

It must be time for the fair!

Actually fair season has been under way for a while now, but it comes home for Red Willow County residents with "our" fair this week.

Negotiations have been in full swing for the last few days, with kids maneuvering to round up as many carnival ride tickets as possible in return for extra chores accomplished for their parents. The carnival began rolling into town on Saturday, and today was the last day the discount tickets were available.

The Moore's Greater Shows carnival opens nightly at 5:30 p.m.

Open class exhibits will be entered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Building, and entertainment kicks into high gear Saturday with the Colgate Country Showdown at 5 p.m. and a concert by Rushlow Harris at 8 p.m.

Thursday, the Lil Red Tractor Pedal Pull is at 5 p.m., and stock cars roar at 7:30 p.m.

On Friday, the Hawk Stockdogs perform in the Kiplinger Arena at 7 p.m., and the NSRA Rodeo is at 8 p.m.

Saturday, the Kiplinger Arena is busy again at 4 p.m. with mutton busting and, at 6 p.m., a chore relay. The NSRA Rodeo follows again at 8 p.m.

Sunday dawns with Cowboy Church in the Kiplinger Arena at 10 a.m., and the Draft Horse Competiition follows at 12:30 p.m. Wild Horse Races and steer riding close out the main fair events at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Of course, that's just the Red Willow County Fair. If you've already experienced this year's fair for your county, you know how enjoyable it can be. Whether it's the cotton candy, the carnival, the 4-H or open exhibits, or the commercial exhibits, it's a great time to learn about new products, enjoy other people's talents, meet new friends or renew old acquaintances.

If your fair is still coming up, make sure you set aside the time to take it in.
