Lead vs. lead
Wednesday, July 18, 2007
Dear Ms. Moore,
I found your fan mail interesting ["Stupid stereotypes" http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/1229693.html].
As you may know the term "lead" has at least two meanings.
I was using the No. 1 and No. 2 preferred meanings defined in my Merriam-Webster Dictionary which means "to guide on the way" as when a rope is fastened to the ring in a bull's nose and he is "lead" around by his owner, hence "lead ring."
The No. 3 definition refers the bluish white metal. If one were to use the metal lead in one's piercings it would probably poison the body, specifically causing diminished brain function, but then I repeat myself.
