Douglas D. Schlegel, 56, died Sunday (May 6, 2007) at McCook Community Hospital. 

He was born in McCook on Oct. 4, 1950, to Darold and Marjorie (Covert) Schlegel. He graduated from McCook High School in 1969, and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1973, with a degree in Agriculture. 

He married Deborah Krieger in McCook on June 21, 1970.  To this union two children were born. 

Doug graduated from auctioneer school in Mason City, Iowa in March of 1996. He was an auctioneer for charities, Rodeo Queen fund raising and estate auctions. He worked for Caldwell-Banker as a Farm and Ranch Specialist. 

He loved his family and his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He especially enjoyed gardening and working in the yard. In every situation he continued to have a great sense of humor.

He was a member of the Culbertson United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Darold and his grandfather, Willard.

He is survived by his son, Tanner Schlegel and wife, Jessica of McCook; daughter, Lisa Brown and husband, Troy of Gering; three grandchildren, Josie, Jessica and Haylee; mother, Marjorie Schlegel of Culbertson; grandmother, Helen Schlegel of McCook; brothers, Michael Schlegel and wife, Carol of Culbertson and Tim Schlegel and wife, Kathy of Centerton, Ark.; sister, Kristi Schlegel of Aiken, S.C.; and friend and companion, Dannette Miller.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at Carpenter Breland Funeral Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating.  Burial will be in the Culbertson Cemetery.
