Taxes and liquor

Friday, April 27, 2007

Dear Editor,

A couple of things have lately come into the news, that I would like to address.

First, sales tax. We all dislike the word tax. However, the 1 percent tax in McCook has been a lifesaver for us. High as property taxes are, they would still be more if we didn't have the sales tax.

Upkeep is necessary with anything if we expect [to keep] it from going into deterioration.

That is the way with our city -- we have to maintain what we have, as well as we have to add, now and then, something to keep up with the march of time. Sales tax is not an apparition, it always is going to be needed, so why have a term limit?

Let's think about this before it comes up for election. Let's have the 11?2 percent sales tax with no termination date. McCook proper needs the help of all shoppers, near and far.

If we ever hope to attract new business and residents -- better we have something to offer.

Second, another debatable subject is temporary liquor permits. I personally do not endorse liquor in any form, but it is an item that is with us to stay. If these one-stand permits are given with the condition that everything will be carefully watched to see that nothing get out-of-control, then what's the beef?

We like to have conventions and other activities; it's a boon to our town.

If we don't broaden our sights a little, we're going to be left out.

Those things will go elsewhere. People coming and planning to locate in McCook first of all, check out our schools, churches, places of entertainment, etc.

Let's let our city fathers judge very carefully before they say "no" to too many things. Let's do all we can to enhance our finances and keep expenses under control.

Esther Wissbaum,

McCook
