Letter to the Editor

Wear white armband

Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Dear Editor and people of Nebraska,

I have just been reading about you online from an article in the LA Times. I learnt of the sad loss of Randy Matheny and the honourable actions of your two senators -- Hagel and Nelson.

I just wanted to send some empathy from here in England. The situation in Iraq has claimed enough lives and there is no clear end in sight. Each day more lives are lost from all countries and for what outcome? The actions of our governments are growing more and more obviously wrong and we cannot allow this to go unchallenged.

When the citizens of the U.S. voted for a Democrat Congress, I believe you were voting for an end to the war in Iraq -- but it doesn't seem to be happening and it is certainly not happening quickly enough. I write, I march and I campaign for an end to the war in Iraq -- but it is tough to be heard. Our government here in the UK seems set on staying with your government and we need to let them know we don't want this anymore.

There are no WMDs, the Iraqis had nothing to do with 9/11 and Saddam is no more -- so why are we still sending our young to their deaths?

I write today to ask you to join me and other individuals the world over who are making a statement -- "I want an end to the war in Iraq" and signifying this statement by the wearing of a simple home-made white fabric armband. No cost and instantly available by tearing and wearing fabric from sheets, t-shirts etc.

In order to achieve unity and the visibility that our governments can't ignore, we need to work together as masses of individuals and support and encourage those brave politicians who stand with us for sanity. There is only one statement, deliberately -- to keep this straightforward and frank -- no other agenda, no bias, no other purpose -- just an end to the war in Iraq.

Please join with us and wear this symbol at all times. It is self-empowerment, it is the chance to make your opinion public, it encourages dialogue and this is essential. We are not dis-engaged from this. Randy was one of your own as ours have been - they are our people and we don't want to send any more to their deaths with no good reason.

Thanks so much for your time and regardless of your inclusion or not in this action -- I wish you well from across the pond.

Namaste,

Tina Louise
