Horses need help

Wednesday, March 28, 2007

Dear Editor,

We have a situation in SE Nebraska where a cattle farmer had 250+ horses.

On Wednesday morning, 200-plus were loaded on trucks heading to slaughter due to a situation where the farmer could not place them elsewhere.

One of the rescuers got in touch with the farmer on the day the horses were sent out and he kept 45 horses back for the rescues here to try to save. We have gotten 22 horses out of there so far, but there are still 23 horses left. We have until April 8 to raise the funds to get them out of there.

After that they will need hay, grain, farrier, wormer, vaccinations, and some vet care. There are 14 mares (most pregnant), six geldings, and three studs. There are everything from thoroughbreds to ponies and fat healthy horses to underweight.

The rescues here in Nebraska that are working together to help these horses are Lone Cedar, Epona, Heartland Horse Rescue, and Angel Heart.

There are pictures of all 23 horses on the Heartland Horse Rescue's Web site at www.heartlandhorserescue.com.

There is also a list of what we estimate it will cost for the first month's care of these horses.  All donations towards this cause are tax deductible.

Please, we need your help. If you cannot donate please spread the word to everyone you know.

Thanks,

Christina Miller
