Dangerous limbs

Monday, March 26, 2007

Dear Editor,

After the last big windstorm in McCook, I noticed quite a few of the leftover large hanging limbs from our December ice storm had come tumbling down. I also noticed that there were still quite a few left hanging over the sidewalks and in the area between the sidewalks and street curbs.

In concern for those who, like myself, walk on the sidewalks, I called the city to find out who was responsible for their removal. I was informed that it is the responsibility of the homeowner who cares for the trees and lawn in that area.

Believing that all McCook homeowners are responsible citizens and certainly do not want to cause injury to their neighbors and possibly open themselves to a civil liability suit, I wanted to let you know that the city probably will not be coming by to alleviate this hazard, since it is our responsibility.

Take a look at your trees and see if you need to be taking action to remove a public hazard. If you don't have the physical ability to bring down the hazardous tree limbs in your yard just listen to "Open Line" some morning. I frequently hear people call in advertising to remove trees and branches.

If you have any questions about tree care you can go to www.arborday.org for information on storm damaged trees.
