Letter to the Editor

Love it, or ...

Monday, February 19, 2007

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter to the editor on behalf of myself and some of the local and out-of-state people who reside in the Village of Wilsonville that are sick and tired of the recent letters that you have received.

Wilsonville is a beautiful little village, yes, we may have water issues and buildings falling down, but what other villages in the valley don't?

We have several businesses in Wilsonville, now if Wilsonville was becoming extinct would we have these businesses? We have beauty, auto body and mechanic shops, the local co-op and a car dealership, as well as the trucking businesses and all of the local farmers and ranchers, a Post Office, a wonderful library and last but not least the best greenhouse in the state of Nebraska, which has customers from Wilsonville and the surrounding areas.

I was born and raised in the community, went to grade school here in Wilsonville, then graduated from Beaver Valley High School, went off to nursing school, graduated then received my LPN.

When my husband and I married (he is from the Sandhills) I said if you want to move so that we can be closer to your parents that's fine. He refused, he said that he liked it here, he liked the hunting, fishing and the people. Besides, we could not think of a better place to raise a family. There are several other families in this community that are doing the same as my husband and myself.

My husband and I are both volunteers for the Wilsonville -Hendley Rural Fire District, we are both firefighters and I am an EMT-B. We both work in the surrounding communities as I am now a RN and he works for the local co-op.

Now for the recent letters, there was only one set of foot prints up to the building on main street that the roof and a small part of the north wall caved in, which were the owners, yes there were shards of glass that were on the "sidewalk" only! But now I have a question, what kids were playing in it? I know that mine were not, as well as probably the rest of the kids in town. Maybe the person who wrote the last letter was, who knows!

Now for the streets not being cleaned off, in the years past the town left Main Street for the true memories of the kids (as well as the adults), for playing and sledding down (to see who has the record for the longest trip down it).

I went for a cruise around town and you know what? There were no pick-up tracks in or out of his place, so how does he know that the streets were not cleaned? You know it is kind of hard to clean the streets off when it rains, then we have freezing rain, then snow, then freezing rain then snow again. Trust me I know how hard it was to clean the sidewalks off. My kids and I went around town cleaning the sidewalks for the good citizens who cannot or should not be out there doing it.

Now I know why people have heart attacks scooping snow.

There are a select few who can bicker about who's on the firefighting team as well as the EMT squad, but do you see them volunteering their time helping to save lives or homes? No!, they just complain!

If this little village was so bad would we have stayed here and raised our kids? Wilsonville is a quiet little town, you know your neighbors and know who you can count on. I know that if right now I needed help, all I would have to do is make one phone call and help would be here. Those same select few have also brought the bad reputation to Wilsonville because of all their negative publicity about the village and the people that reside here.

There is so much more I could say, but to save a lawsuit or a restraining order I had better quit.

Now for my conclusion, if you do not like it in Wilsonville, then do not let the "Welcome to Wilsonville" sign hit you on the derriere on the way out!

Respectfully submitted,

Dixie Landreth

Wilsonville
