Give the Big Q Chorus a try

Monday, February 12, 2007

Have a hankering to be in the spotlight?

Not sure you're ready for prime time, but like to give it a shot?

No, there are no auditions set for American Idol, but there's an opportunity to perform for which you're likely to make the cut.

As part of McCook's 125th birthday celebration, the Prairie Statesmen Chorus is putting together the Big Q Chorus, to perform at the barbershopper's annual show on April 14 at Memorial Auditorium.

Why "Big Q"?

"We kept tripping over our tongues when we first called it the McCook Quasiquicentennial Chorus, so we settled on calling it the Big Q Chorus," said Chuck Druse of Cambridge, president of the Prairie Statesmen.

The annual barbershop show is always good, but this year's promises to be one of the best ever, according to singers in the know.

Two international champion quartets, the Vocal Spectrum, reigning champions for the Barbershop Harmony Association, and the Jurassic Larks, past international seniors champions, will be the featured acts.

But there's no reason to let all the "pros" have all the fun, especially this year of McCook's big birthday party.

Any male, young or old, who enjoys singing should consider being a part of the Big Q Chorus.

Practices will be Tuesday nights starting Feb. 27, at the Nazarene Church, West First and H Streets in McCook.

More information is available by contacting Bill Graves, (308) 345-3013 or Don Blank, (308) 3435-4902.

Give it a try; you probably won't make it onto national television, but who knows, maybe you'll find a rewarding new hobby.
