Letter to the Editor

Thanks, McCook

Monday, February 12, 2007

Dear Editor,

To residents of McCook and the surrounding area:

On behalf of the Phelps County Community Foundation, I would like to extend our most humble thanks for your efforts in supporting Holdrege and the surrounding communities following the Dec. 29, 2006, ice storm and power outage.

We have been in awe at the outpouring of concern for the residents of our area.

People all over Nebraska, as well as other states, responded with cash donations, food, paper products, blankets and coats.

It is easy to see other natural disasters, like floods and tornados. You can't see the loss of electricity and understand its impact on families. Many families were without income for weeks. Many could not afford generators and had to find other means of keeping warm. Many businesses rented generators but it was more of a service to the community to have their business open as the cost of generated power and fuel far outweighed any income for their business.

We are so proud of how our community worked together to keep everyone safe, warm and fed. But you have to know that it would not have been an easy task without the support of your communities and others who share that same caring spirit.

Thank you!
