Letter to the Editor

Grandpa was a miner

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Dear Editor,

I am Edna Brush, the grand daughter of Mr. Victor Brown, and I am writing about the Danbury gold mine story in Monday paper.

The story is about a Mr. Brown and a gold mine. He was never given his proper name.  Mr. Piedaleu married Grandpa's sister, Bertha.

The land where the gold mine was and is still located, if you can find it, was owned by my great-grandmother and was sold to Mr. Griff Helm. It has long ago been sold again, and  I don't know who owns it now.

The estimates of the metal ran from $4 to $16 a ton. An $4 estimate meant over $20,000 in gold was spread over the Danbury -- Indianola road.

The "mine" was never fully developed, or mined because one great aunt would not sign the mineral rights paper.

I can not remember which one of them it was as I have not heard the story since my grandfather passed away over 32 years ago.

In 1932 someone panned a bit of gold and that was all that was ever taken out of it.

The story was in the paper about 1967, when all the historic things about all the area towns was being printed.

Edna Brush,

McCook
