Authorities keeping our roads safe, one way or another

Saturday, December 30, 2006

If the snow and ice aren't enough to create cautious driving over the New Year's holiday, perhaps this is:

The Nebraska State Patrol has the equivalent of 33 extra troopers on duty -- 266 hours of overtime -- for the weekend, thanks to a $12,000 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety.

Only one person was killed in last year's New Year's holiday enforcement period, compared to two the year before.

But even one is too many.

It looks like officers are more likely to be involved in travel safety issues related to ice, snow and stranded travelers than drunk drivers, but we're sure that won't keep every irresponsible motorist off the road.

So if you do go out for a celebration that involves drinking, plan ahead for a safe trip home, whether by designating a sober driver, hitching a ride with a sober friend, or calling a taxi. McCook is fortunate in that regard, to have a thriving taxi company back in business.

If the weather disrupts your travel plans, don't let the time go to waste. Spend time talking or playing board games with your friends and loved ones. Reflect on the blessings of the past year, and hopes for 2007.

If nothing else, grab the telephone or Internet hookup and keep in touch with those you miss.

Here's to a safe and joyous holiday celebration and a prosperous New Year.
