Letter to the Editor

Thanks for the memories

Dear Editor,

I found this article on the Web ["MJC gets help from the Land of Goshen" (http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/1169826.html)].

I was one of the starting offensive tackles along with Dennis Franks of McCook who was the other starting OT on the 69 team with Caddy and Greg Finn. That team beat a great NU freshman team that was the core of their three championship teams. Caddy and Greg were also roommates that 69 year.

That also was my best sports memory as I'm sure it was for many of us on that team. We beat them in the big stadium too. Yes it was sad to see MJC drop football after the 70 season due to failure to pass an increase in a millage by the McCook town board.

I was also at the board meeting the night football was dropped. Several players on the 1969-70 1970-71 teams went on to play some pro ball. Ken Sanduk played for the Chicago Fire of the old World Football League and Al Simpson played for Buffalo in the NFL.

We had talented players from all over the country on that team. I lost all contact with any of those teammates better than 20 years ago but the Marshall movie/story prompted me to search the Web for Greg Finn and that brought me here. Thanks for the memories.

Marty Powers,
